In 1859 the Swiss businessman Henri Dunand became the
witness of bloody battle at Solferino between the joint armies of France, Piedmont
and Sardinia on the one hand and the Austrian army with another. Upon return to
Geneva Dunand wrote the book "Reminiscence of Fight at Solferino" and
decided to do everything possible to reduce sufferings of soldiers.
Today, on May 11, 2013, the Lithuania post issued a postage
stamp dated for the 150 anniversary of
creation of the international movement Red Cross and Red Crescent.
The issue is printed in mini sheet of 4 values with decorating margins. Artist T
Dragunas. Offset. Art paper. Size of stamp: 30 x 36 mm. Edition: 80 000 copies. Printing
in printing-house “Garsu Pasaulis”
(Lithuania).
In 1863
in Geneva was founded the humanitarian organization
"International Committee of the Red Cross". As an emblem of
society the Swiss flag on which color of a red field was changed on white, and
color of a white cross - on red was chosen. The purpose of the organization is
protection of life and health for the person, ensuring support of victims of
armed conflicts, natural disasters, the organizations of donors, the help to
patients and wounded soldiers, and also the medical personnel.
