The nature reserve "Ubsu-Nur Depression" is
created in 1993 for protection and studying of unique and various ecosystems of
a hollow - from the mountain tundra to deserts. The Ubsu-Nur Depression
represents the natural bowl of 600 by 150 kilometres in
size which has been fenced off from world around by ridges in the centre of the
Asian continent. The main unique natural feature of Ubsu-Nur Depression is
existence of almost all landscapes of a moderate belt of Earth on very limited
space. At the bottom of a hollow the small lake Ubsu-Nur remained. The scientists
consider that the lake once was part of the sea which gradually dried up,
having left the mountains maleficiated by sea waves.
